Condoms have a Pearl Index of 2-12, which means that out of 100 women who use condoms for a year, 2 to 12 will become pregnant. In most cases, this high number is due to application errors. However, when it comes to protection against STIs such as HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, a condom offers a very high level of protection.

1. Condoms should always be stored in a cool, dry place. Direct exposure to heat makes condoms brittle. It is also important that the sealing film is undamaged and that the best-before date is not exceeded.
2. When tearing open the sealing film, do not use sharp-edged objects such as teeth or fingernails so that the condom cannot be damaged.
3. Check in which direction the condom can be unrolled. If it does not unroll, it has been placed on the penis the wrong way round. However, semen may have already reached the condom. Therefore, do not simply turn it over, but use a new condom!
4. Hold the reservoir with your thumb and forefinger so that there is no air cushion. Pull the foreskin back a little and roll the condom completely over the stiff penis from the reservoir.

In principle, condoms should only be stored at temperatures of up to 30°C over a longer period of time. You should also not store condoms permanently in direct sunlight. However, short-term storage for 3-4 days in extreme heat of up to 40°C, for example during transport by post, in your car or in a packing station, is possible without any problems.
